From Upstate to the Front Range

A man wearing a baseball cap, sunglasses, gloves, and work clothes kneels in a cemetery, planting a tree next to a tombstone.

The name Barkeater comes from the Adirondack Mountains in upstate New York, an area that helped form who I am today "Bark eater" is what the Mohawk called the people who settled those mountains — a nod to how tough the land was and how deeply its people were tied to the forest. That connection to wild places is the foundation of everything I do.

I studied wildlife management at Paul Smith's College in the heart of the Adirondacks, then moved to Colorado and spent six years as a park ranger with Colorado Parks and Wildlife. Those years gave me an intimate understanding of how ecosystems work — how trees, soil, water, and wildlife all depend on each other.

When I was ready for something new in 2021, I turned to arboriculture. The transition felt natural. Trees had always been central to every landscape I managed, and I wanted to focus my career on protecting them. I earned my ISA Certified Arborist credential and founded Barkeater Tree Care and Consulting to bring that same conservation ethic to the neighborhoods of Boulder County.

What Makes Barkeater Different

Most tree companies are built around volume — big crews, big equipment, and a sales process designed to maximize revenue per visit. Barkeater Trees is built differently. I'm a solo ISA Certified Arborist, which means I do the consultation, the assessment, and the work myself. There's no salesman. There's no crew you've never met showing up at your door two weeks or even two months later.

This model keeps my overhead low, which means better pricing for you. But more importantly, it means every decision about your trees is made by a certified professional who's seen them up close — not relayed through layers of staff.

I don't upsell. If your tree doesn't need work, I'll tell you. If it does, I'll explain exactly why and what I recommend. My goal is for you to understand your trees better after our conversation than you did before it.
